Who we are

The Walker Art Gallery is situated a few doors up from the Liverpool World Museum and provides students with a unique learning experience outside the classroom in a rich, exciting and inspiring environment. The Gallery holds a world-class collection of paintings, sculpture and decorative art from across Europe. Art works on display date from the 13th century to the present day. The Gallery holds particularly strong collections of Medieval and Renaissance works, Victorian and Pre-Raphaelite Art and modern and contemporary work as well as a sculpture gallery, craft and design gallery. The dedicated children’s gallery, Big Art for Little Artists is designed with 0-8 year olds in mind and is a perfect introduction to art galleries for Early Years groups. The Gallery also hosts an excellent programme of changing temporary exhibitions including the biannual John Moores Contemporary Painting Prize Exhibition. Key themes in the gallery include people and places, narratives, and colour and pattern. Popular topics for schools include Tudors, Greeks, Portraiture and Impressionism. Teachers can choose to lead their own sessions or to have a gallery led session. These sessions develop pupil’s skills in understanding visual language, as they unlock stories and meanings and participate in fun practical activities. The Walker partners with the National Gallery’s hugely successful Take One Picture scheme which uses paintings as the starting point for cross-curricular teaching and learning
