Who we are

Threlkeld Quarry & Mining Museum offers a range of activities for visiting school groups which are both fun and educational for children, covering a variety of subjects from the Lakes industrial history through to mining and geology. Visits to the quarry and museum are suitable for primary school children and support History and Geography schemes of work. The museum and quarry have exhibitions on mining and quarrying. There is a railway and mine quarry to visit. The site is also the home of the Vintage Excavator Trust and there are many excavators to see. A typical school visit includes: • A short talk on the geology of the Lake District and the history of mining followed by a look around the quarrying and mining rooms of the museum. • A train ride to view the Threlkeld Micro-granite Quarry • A guided tour through a replica lead/copper mine • A guided visit to the quarry to demonstrate the roles of quarrying machinery and vehicles • Mineral Panning. Pre booking is required and the museum encourages teachers to contact them in advance to discuss specifics of the visit. A charge is payable.
