Who we are

They Eat Culture is a cultural arts development social enterprise based at the New Continental in Preston. They specialise in creative and professional development through cultural events and run online and offline creative and media projects across Lancashire. They Eat Culture programme and operate the year round arts calendar at The Continental Arts Space, a multifunctional self-contained building attached to the vibrant Continental bar/restaurant on the riverside in Preston. Events include small-scale nationally-touring theatre productions, internationally touring children's theatre, comedy, lectures, live literature, international jazz, contemporary and experimental music, workshops & classes. They also host an associate artist & volunteer scheme and an online creative writing hub. They Eat Culture’s projects tend to be longer term, embedded and community specific within the Preston area, bringing together artists from a range of disciplines to collaborate with young people and communities to define and develop programmes of work. They Eat Culture’s work with young people and schools is often connected to these longer term programmes, working with schools within historically marginalised communities to curate film festivals and other events which feed in to an ongoing programme. They are also able to offer a bespoke service to schools outside these geographic areas and can develop programmes in film-making, storytelling, creative writing, making and media. Their experience in creating site-responsive events can be adapted to work with schools who wish to devise and create site specific art and events or explore the co-design of spaces. They have experience in working with young people to curate film festivals which increase knowledge and experience of film culture and literacy. The company’s project strand is most suited to KS3/4/5 while their incoming programme at The Continental includes international touring children’s theatre performances which are often suitable for very young children. The full programme of performances and events at The Continental can be found on their website http://www.newcontinental.net/ As practising artists, They Eat Culture bring a skill set and range of experience to their work with schools which is developed through their own practise and continuing professional development. They work with schools and young people in a way which is responsive to the needs and interests of participants, enabling young people to take control of project development within a supportive and professional relationship.
