Who we are

Muncaster Castle overlooks the River Esk in Cumbria and has been of strategic importance since Roman times. It is home to the Penningtons, who have resided at the castle since 1208. Schools can book History Tours which explore how people have lived at Muncaster since medieval times and how changes in society have influenced the use and construction of the castle. The History Tour is an opportunity to compare life in the past to how we live today through studying everyday objects and the tales told about the people who have lived and worked there. The fact that the Pennington family still live on the site and can be seen working on the estate, adds a personal focus. Schools can also visit the 'Himalayan' gardens, the World Owl Centre and the Meadow Vole Maze as well as the extensive castle grounds, easily providing a full day of activities Visits are mainly for Key Stage 1 and 2 and support National Curriculum programmes of study in Geography, Science and History.
