Who we are

The Lakeland Motor Museum is in the picturesque Leven Valley at Backbarrow, close to the southern tip of Lake Windermere. The museum holds a diverse and unique road transport collection of some 30,000 exhibits assembled over a period of almost 50 years. The museum has a wide range of exhibitions including; Early Motoring in the English Lake District, a 1930’s Westmorland garage re-creation, and the Campbell Bluebird Exhibition which pays tribute to father and son, Sir Malcolm and Donald Campbell, who between them captured 21 World land and water speed records in the Bluebird series of boats and cars. The vast collection of exhibits is a useful resource for schools and can be used for observation and comparison work and to demonstrate how advancements in technology have enabled new materials, designs and features to be incorporated into motor vehicles. A visit to the museum is suitable for primary school children and supports History and Science in the curriculum. There are charges for school visits but the museum operates combined ticketing arrangements with Windermere Lake Cruises and the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Steam Railway.
