Who we are

Hack Green Nuclear Bunker is a truly unique experience. Hack Green was one of the nation’s most secret defence sites and has played a central role in the defence of Britain for almost sixty years. As you approach Hack Green over the picturesque farmland and rolling Cheshire countryside, it's hard to imagine a more peaceful location, but it was not always like this! Originally used as a bombing decoy site in the Second World War, it was chosen in 1941 to become one of 21 fixed radar stations, and one of only 12 to be equipped with searchlights and fighter aircraft control. In 1976 it was purchased by the MOD to become a protected seat for government, responsible for protecting the whole of the North West. A visit to the bunker is ideally suited to young people of Key Stage 3, 4 and above as it provides a perfect opportunity to explore the Cold War almost first hand. Teachers can self-guide their groups around the bunker site and the staff at the bunker are happy to provide a questionnaire to help the students pinpoint the most interesting and relevant features. Younger children are welcome to visit the bunker with school groups and families and can take a ‘Mouse Trail’ around the site.
