Who we are

Bury Transport Museum and the East Lancashire Railway offer an exciting range of programmes, some offered in partnership with other local museums, to provide interesting, memorable and educational day trips for schools. These sessions can be tailored to fit the needs and interests of your group. The Evacuee Experience is the most popular session for which early booking is advised. Involving a ride on a steam train, a role playing exercise and object handling, this session is suitable for Key Stage Two and up. It sits alongside Victorian Variety, the Geography Rail Trail, Town Trail and Introducing Fieldwork as part of a rounded offer. The most recent addition to the programme is Wonderful Wheels, aimed at Early Years and Key Stage One children. Due to the age of the children, this has a more flexible structure than many of the sessions, allowing teachers to choose from a full or half day visit and with the option of a steam train ride from April to September. In addition to the sessions detailed in full on their website, they can also offer you the chance to work with the Education team to build your own visit tailored to your needs. This may involve craft activities, adapting existing sessions for pupils with additional needs, or creating a day to fit in with your topic for the term. Over the past couple of years they have created sessions focussing on art and design, geography, history, literacy, and even team work. The dedicated education suite at the museum is accessible by lift and there are lifts to the two display platforms. The main museum floor is cobbled. Teachers and trip organisers are invited to contact the museum to arrange a free pre visit to assist with planning and risk assessments.
